Discovering Factors of Community Membership
Uncovering why people join and stay in a community.

Summary
A software company specializing in intelligent business solutions to optimize customer engagement and operations ran an online community of their platform's developers. They wanted to know -- why do people join and stay in a community?
As an independent researcher, I conducted a field study to understand what motivates individuals to join and remain in a community. The study examined any voluntary community membership, and collected qualitative data through interviews and workshop activities.
Data analysis validated and disproved hypothesized behaviors and motivations. Insights were shared in a report that introduced the “Independent Consulter" persona and shed light on key factors influencing community membership that are applicable to growing and enhancing collaboration within the company's online community.
